Arc Awarded Grant for Computer Lab

Grant Will Fund Two Communications Programs

Promoting Internet Safety & Self-Advocacy

The Arc of Butte County was recently awarded $27,736 from the California Communications Access Foundation (CCAF) to fund two exciting new programs: the “Family Computer Project” and the “Ready…Set…Connect! Training Lab”. Both are designed to provide the tools and training for effective and safe online communication for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The grants were attained thanks to the talent and exceptional efforts of Arc consultants Katrina Davis-Woodcox and Tempra Board.

The primary goal of both projects is to improve communication and provide greater online access for children and adults with developmental disabilities as well as their families. Both programs are designed to provide internet, email and social networking options that will inspire communication, encourage expression, and foster independence while being protected by using safe and secure navigation skills

The Family Computer Project will serve 15 families by providing the necessary computer equipment, software, and training to increase communication opportunities while teaching healthy, safe internet navigation. The “Ready…Set…Connect!” computer training lab will help up to 30 individuals with developmental disabilities who attend the Arc Adult Day Program in Paradise. Funding will provide computer equipment, educational software, and training that includes class curriculum specifically designed to teach communication opportunities, encourage expression and promote independence with a concentration on internet safety and responsibility.

Without a doubt, the internet has become the most powerful communication tool throughout the world. The advantages of internet use are tremendous; faster communication, information resources, entertainment, social networking and e-commerce, including business opportunities. Yet for individuals with developmental disabilities, this tool is often out of reach, intimidating, and without proper training and support, can also leave them vulnerable to financial and emotional exploitation.

Thanks to the support of the CCAF, the Arc of Butte County can now help individuals with developmental disabilities and their families access this significant tool in a successful, fun and safe way.
